CHEWY CHERRY BARS 
1 c. flour
1 c. rolled oats
1 c. brown sugar, lightly packed
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. almond extract
2 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 c. coconut
1 c. maraschino cherries, chopped
1/2 c. chopped pecans or walnuts

Combine flour, oats, brown sugar and baking soda. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Press into 13 x 9 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Beat eggs, brown sugar and extract together thoroughly. Combine flour, baking powder and stir into egg mixture. Stir in coconut, cherries and nuts. Spread evenly over baked crust and bake an additional 25 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool completely and frost.

FROSTING:

1/4 c. butter
1/2 tsp. almond extract
2 c. powdered sugar
3 - 4 tbsp. cream

Beat all ingredients together until smooth and creamy. Spread over bars. Makes about 4 dozen small squares. Excellent for freezing.
