APPLE PAN DOWDY 
1 qt. apples, peeled and sliced
1 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. flour
1 tbsp. vinegar
3/4 c. water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. butter

Mix brown sugar, flour, vinegar and water together and cook over low fire until thick, stirring constantly. Cool and add vanilla and butter. Pour over apple slices which have been lined in a deep pie plate.

TOPPING:

1 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 1/4 tbsp. shortening
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. milk

Sift dry ingredients together twice. Cut in shortening until smooth. Add milk enough to wet flour mixture. Drop by spoonfuls over apples. Bake 35 minutes in 350 degree oven.
