OLD FASHION BLACKBERRY CAKE 
2 c. granulated sugar
1 c. Crisco shortening
3 c. self-rising flour
6 eggs
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. allspice
2 tsp. ginger
2 tsp. nutmeg
2 c. blackberries, drained (save juice for icing)
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 c. nuts, broken up (walnuts)

Mix soda and buttermilk together and set aside. While you combine the rest of ingredients. Cream shortening and sugar. Add your eggs, one at a time, as you blend the batter. Add the spices and your flour, one cup at a time, while you are blending. Fold your berries and nuts last. So as not to blend them in, but gently fold. Alternate adding you buttermilk mixture and cup of flour to give a good batter. Grease and flour a 10 x 13 inch pan and bake in a preheated oven, 300 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes.
