BEAN SOUP 
1 lb. pkg. navy beans
1 ham bone, with some meat on it (bacon may be substituted)
1 lg. onion, cut up
2 carrots, diced
Salt and pepper

Soak beans overnight, uncovered. Do not drain. Next day pour beans and water into large pot or Dutch oven. Add ham bone; cut off a few pieces of the meat, adding it to the beans also. Add onion and carrots. Add more water so that pot is 3/4 full. Simmer all day or at least 4 hours. During the last hour of cooking, mash beans to thicken the consistency of soup. Salt and pepper to taste. Could be fixed in crock pot very nicely but don't use as much water.
