DROP SUGAR CAKES 
1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
3/4 c. buttermilk
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. butter
3 eggs
4 c. plus 2 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda

Cream sugar, shortening and butter. Add eggs, beating after each addition. Add flour, baking powder, salt and cream of tartar. Mix baking soda with 1/4 cup of buttermilk and vanilla to the other ingredients. Beat thoroughly. Drop dough by teaspoon onto cookie sheet. Sprinkle each mound with a little sugar. Bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes or until edge turns light brown.
