SOFT PRETZELS 
2 pkgs. yeast
2 c. warm water
1/2 c. sugar
2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. soft butter
1 egg
About 7 c. flour

Sprinkle yeast in warm water. Add sugar, salt, butter and egg and 3 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Add enough more flour to make a stiff dough. Let rise 1 hour. Shape into pencil shape pretzels on lightly greased baking sheets. Let rise about 25 minutes. Then in an enameled pan place 6 cups water and 6 tablespoons soda. Bring to a boil. Keep boiling gently as you carefully lower each pretzel for 10 seconds. Lift from water, drain (use slotted spatula) and place on baking sheet. Sprinkle with coarse salt. Wait until all are dipped. Bake in a 400 (425) degree oven for about 12 minutes (golden brown).
