SOUTHERN-STYLE BROWN STEW 
2 lbs. boneless beef chuck, cut into 1 1/2 inch cubes
Flour
2 tbsp. shortening
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
2 sm. bay leaves
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 clove of garlic, minced
6 carrots, quartered
8 sm. onions
3 potatoes, quartered

Dip beef into flour. Brown on all sides in shortening in skillet. Add 4 cups boiling water and next 6 ingredients. Simmer for 2 hours, stirring frequently. Add vegetables. Cook for 30 minutes longer or until vegetables are tender. Thicken stew with flour if desired.
