Wash and place cucumbers in stone jar. Put 2 cups salt in enough boiling water to cover cucumbers. Let stand for 2 hours. Pour off and put 3/4 cup of powdered alum in boiling water to cover cucumbers and let stand 24 hours. Pour off and put clear boiling water over cucumbers, let stand 24 hours. Boil vinegar and whole cloves together, pour over cucumbers. Let stand 9 days. Take them out of vinegar, cut in 1/2 inch chunks and pack in jars -- a layer of cucumbers and a layer of sugar until you get to top with a layer of sugar last. Tie cloth over jar, store in a dark place.
