ITALIAN PICNIC BREAD | |
1/2 lb. Italian sausage; casings removed and crumbled 1 c. each onions and mushrooms 1 tsp. each garlic and oregano 1 (14 1/2 oz.) can Italian flavored crushed tomatoes 2 loaves bread dough - if frozen - thaw 1/2 c. shredded Mozzarella 2 tbsp. Parmesan 1 egg, beaten Brown sausage, breaking up large pieces. Mix in onions, mushrooms and garlic, saute until tender. Stir in tomatoes and oregano, bring to a boil; simmer 5 minutes and set aside. Grease a springform pan; press 1 loaf dough in bottom of pan and up sides slightly. Spread meat mixture in center, leaving a 1 inch margin on all sides. Top with cheeses. Roll out other loaf and cut into strips. Place strips on top, pressing ends into lower dough. Cover loosely; let rise until doubled. Brush dough with egg. Bake at 375 degrees for 20-30 minutes. |
