2 c. flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs
2 tbsp. cocoa
2 c. applesauce
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. chocolate chips
nuts (if desired)

Cream sugar and shortening; add eggs and beat well. Stir in other ingredients.

Bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes. Top with chocolate chips and/or nuts while warm.
