EASY FRENCH BREAD 
1 pkg. dry yeast
1 1/2 c. very warm water
1 tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. soft shortening
4 c. sifted flour

Put yeast in 1/2 cup warm water. Stir until dissolved. Sugar, salt in remaining water, add shortening and yeast. Mix well, add flour and mix. Work through dough with spoon at 10 minute intervals, 5 times. Turn dough on lightly floured board. Divide into two. Let rest 10 minutes. Roll 12x9, roll up tightly, seal edges. Smooth out. Cover with towel and let rise 1 1/2 hours. Brush with butter. Bake at 375 for 30 35 minutes.
