THUMBPRINT COOKIES 
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 c. shortening
1 egg, separated
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
Nut halves, jelly, jam or cherries

Cream shortening, brown sugar, egg yolk and vanilla. Stir in flour and salt. Roll into balls and dip into slightly beaten egg white. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet, press thumb in center of each. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes or until browned.

Remove and press nut half or cherry into center, or put a spoonful of jam or jelly in the middle.
