THUMBPRINT COOKIES OR BIRDS
NESTS
 
1 c. shortening
1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
2 c. flour
2 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
Ground nuts

Mix thoroughly the shortening and brown sugar. Add flour; mix well. Add egg yolks, vanilla and salt. Roll dough into balls (1 teaspoon). Beat egg whites, dip balls into egg whites, then into nuts. Place 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Press thumb lightly in center of each cookie. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool. Fill with jelly or colored butter frosting.
