GINGER COOKIES 
3/4 c. shortening
1 c. white or brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg
1/4 c. dark molasses
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. ground cloves
Granulated sugar

Cream shortening, sugar, egg and molasses. Mix in remaining ingredients. Cover, chill 1 hour. Form into walnut size balls, dip into granulated sugar. Place sugar side up 3 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheet (balls will flatten). Bake 10 - 12 minutes at 350 degrees. Immediately remove cookies to cool. Yields 2 1/2 dozen.
