3/4 c. shortening
1 1/4 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 c. chopped dates
3 tbsp. cocoa
1 1/4 c. hot water
1 1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda

TOPPING:

1/4 c. sugar
1 pkg. chocolate chips
3/4 c. chopped walnuts

Cream shortening, sugar, eggs, dates and cocoa. Sift together flour, salt and soda; add to above ingredients. Put in greased 9 x 12 inch pan. Sprinkle with sugar, then chocolate, then walnuts. Bake 35-45 minutes at 350 degrees.
