BAKELESS STRAWBERRY BUTTER TORTE 
1 1/2 sticks butter
1 1/2 c. fine vanilla wafer crumbs
2 1/2 c. sifted powdered sugar
2 eggs
1/2 pt. heavy cream
Fresh strawberry halves for garnish.
1/4 c. granulated sugar
1 1/2 c. fresh, sliced strawberries
3/4 c. chopped pecans or walnuts

Melt one half stick of the butter. Combine melted butter and 1 cup of the crumbs; mix well. Press mixture on bottom of 8"x8" pan. Combine remaining one stick butter and powdered sugar, mixing well with mixer. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat until mixture is smooth. Spread mixture over crumbs in pan. Sprinkle remaining crumbs on top. Whip cream until soft peaks form. Gradually add granulated sugar. Whip until stiff. Fold in nuts and sliced strawberries. Spoon mixture onto crumbs. Refrigerate overnight or until firm. Generously garnish each serving with strawberry halves. 9 servings. (Fresh peaches may be substituted for strawberries, if desired.
