BUTTERMILK SPICE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. cake flour
1 c. granulated sugar
3/4 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. cloves
1 1/3 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. butter, softened
3 eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 1 (9 x 13 x 2 inch) pan or 2 (9 inch) round cake pans. Measure all ingredients into large mixer bowl. Blend 1/2 minute on low speed, scraping bowl constantly. Beat 3 minutes on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour into pans. Bake oblong pan 45 minutes, layers 40 to 45 minutes or until done. Cool and frost with Brown Butter Icing.

BROWN BUTTER ICING:

3 c. powdered sugar
1/3 c. butter
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
About 2 tbsp. milk

Heat butter over medium heat in small saucepan until delicate brown. Mix powdered sugar and butter. Stir in vanilla and milk; beat until frosting is smooth and of spreading consistency. Makes enough for a 13 x 9 x 2 inch cake or 2 (8 or 9 inch) layers.
