CLOVE CAKE (OLD-TIME) 
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar (brown or white)
2 c. flour
1 c. sour milk or buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Dash of salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda (add to buttermilk)
1 c. raisins & nuts, if desired

Mix shortening and sugar. Sift flour and spices together. Add alternately with sour milk to the shortening mixture. Add raisins and nuts if desired. Add beaten egg last. Maybe baked as muffins (makes 18). As cake 9 x 12 inch greased pan 350-375 degrees for 45 minutes. As cupcakes (in muffin pans) 400 degrees for 13-15 minutes. Fills the house with a great spicy aroma, great at the holidays.
