1 c. butter
1 c. shortening
2 c. powdered sugar, packed
2 eggs, beaten
2 tsp. vanilla
4 c. sifted flour
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Thoroughly cream butter and shortening. Add powdered sugar; cream well. Add beaten eggs and vanilla to creamed mixture and mix well. Fold in sifted flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt. Chill two hours. On lightly floured surface, roll to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cutters. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool slightly; remove from pan. Decorate as desired or use the following dipping icing.
