GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE 
4 egg whites
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. carob or cocoa or two cubes of chocolate
1/2 c. hot water
1 c. butter
1 c. sugar
4 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. sour milk (regular milk with 1 tsp. vinegar)
2 c. whole wheat flour (fine)
1/2 c. cornstarch

Mix until stiff peaks: egg whites and cream of tartar. Sprinkle in slowly: 1/2 cup sugar. Mix together until creamy: carob, hot water, butter, 1 cup sugar, egg yolks, vanilla, soda, salt, sour milk, whole wheat flour and cornstarch. Fold first mixture into second mixture and put in greased and floured two 9-inch cake pans.

Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Frost with cool with German Chocolate Frosting.
