Thanks for the simple recipe. My husband loves shepherd's pie but every recipe he looked at was not what he remembered having as a kid. Can't wait to make it tonight :)

I've been to England many times and have tried the "original" shepherds pie several times. I believe they could learn a thing or two from the American version, I go for the taste not the originality of the dish. I tried your recipe and was pleased with the prep time and most of all, the taste.

I add a can of cream of mushroom/celery/broccoli soup to mine to help keep it moist. That eliminates the broiling (it heats my lil house up too much) and I cook mine at 375°F for 30 minutes, then add the cheese and cook until the cheese melts.

I have to say I was a lil bit nervous about using the sugar, but it came out wonderful. The only thing I did different was I added a packet of brown gravy, and some beef stock. Super quick and easy, thank you Vanessa

Hi Vanessa
Glad to see this recipe, I love it. This was a school house favorite everybody eats when they cook shepherds pie. A good change is to use a can of diced tomatoes in stead of peas. Those shepherds must be American

Vanessa, I tried it and my family LOVES it. We always have these simple items on hand. It reminds me of my childhood, my mom used to make something very similar.

This recipe is a typical AMERICAN sherpards pie.. so for al those knocking it for it unauthenticity.. its American.. it was exactly like my mama makes it!!

I agree with Libby! Who cares if its not authentic british as long as people are enjoying it. I have yet to try this, but it was a frequent dish when I worked at a daycare. I live on a farm with my boyfriend and he works all day long, so he needs hearty suppers with meat and potatoes and such. I'm going to try this tonite and see how he likes it. Hopefully it comes close to his mom's version which I have no idea how to make! Haha!

Hello, your recipe is wonderful. Thanks. And in regards to the above comment -- this is the sort of thing that is wrong with our country. The way I have heard this recipe all of my life, is that it should contain meat, veggies and potatoes on top in this manner. The variations are numerous, and according to family preference and availability of ingredients. To assume, and announce that your way is the only or best way, is ignorant and incredibly rude.

I think this is a good recipe...as Americans, we are always dealing with picky eaters, or just wanting something different in our recipe files...money saving, and tasty. Thanks for letting the "Brits" know that there are other ways of making dishes, maybe they will try this one...! Rock on Vanessa!! ;o)

I made it last night for my family. You should use two pounds of meat.

This is the simple recipe I was looking for. Not the British version or any other version where you need 100 ingredients. I needed something simple. Otherwise I would be cooking all night long.

Hi! The comment on true shepherds pie was a bit rude, I love the cowboys pie idea and I was actually searching shepherds pie with ground beef and potatoes for a bit of an idea, so I appreciate the post and it was great!
