1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 1/2 mashed sweetened applesauce
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
2 tbsp. cocoa
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped raisins
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Cream the shortening and sugar together. Add the applesauce in which the soda has been dissolved. Add the flour sifted with the spices, cocoa and salt and beat smooth. Fold in the raisins and nuts. Bake in a shallow loaf in a moderate oven (350 degrees) for 30 to 45 minutes.
