HOMEMADE LYE SOUP | |
1 can lye 4 lb. hog fat, grease or fat meat scraps 1 c. Borax or soap powder 10 qt. water NOTE: Always make soap before the new moon. Combine lye and fat in wash pot. Build a small fire around pot. Keep fire low. Cook slowly. Add 1 quart of water at a time, stirring to keep from scorching until all 10 quarts of water is used. Cook until soap threads or thickens. Ad Borax. Pull fire away from pot. Take soap up. Pour into pan and cut in blocks. |
