Anyone who is Pennsylvania Dutch (German) knows that the chocolate goes in the shell first then the batter is added.

As a granddaughter of a true PA Dutch lady, the chocolate mixture was placed in the pie shell first. I've heard it done both ways, but my grandmother's was amazing - no one in my family has been able to duplicate and I've tried many made by others (even Amish) and they don't come close!

I agree you put the chocolate sauce after the batter. We also add chopped/minced walnuts on top before we bake. Been making this for the past 40 years. We always called it Funny Face Pie. I always make it at Christmas time.

Sara is right. You put the cake part into the crust and pour the chocolate over the top. When the cake bakes the chocolate layer ends up between the cake and pie crust and your cake is still white. That's what makes it funny. How I do not know?

 A Yoder (New York) says:
This is the way a true funny cake is made. The chocolate goes in first. The funny part is that the chocolate is like an icing and on the bottom. My granny made many and this is by far my favorite cake/pie. My neice is even making them keeping the funny cake in the family for another generation.

 Sara Coppola (Texas) says:
This is not how a funny cake is made - you put the batter in the pie shell first and then pour the chocolate over it - that is why it is called a "funny" cake because the chocolate sinks to the bottom when baking.
