RED DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 tsp. salt
1/3 c. cold water
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
3 egg whites
1/3 c. cold water
1 3/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. cocoa
1 c. cold water
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda

Stir shortening until softened. Add 1 cup sugar and cream until light. Add salt and vanilla. Combine 1/3 cup water and cocoa. Beat into creamed mixture. Add flour alternately with 1 cup cold water. Beat after each addition. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add remaining 3/4 cup sugar, beating until stiff peaks form. Fold into batter.

Dissolve soda in 1/3 cup cold water. Add to batter. Mix well. Put in greased 9x13 inch or two 9-inch round pans. Bake at 350 degrees about 30 minutes or until done.
