CARNIVAL DESSERT 
1/3 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. milk
2 - 2 1/2 c. pitted cherries
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Cream shortening, add sugar gradually, cream until fluffy. Now blend in well beaten eggs.

Sift flour, baking powder, soda together. Stir into creamed mixture alternately with milk. Blend in well drained cherries and nuts. Save cherry juice.

Pour into greased and floured pan (8 x 12) and bake 50 minutes at 350 degrees.

HOT CHERRY SAUCE:

1/2 c. sugar
2 tbsp. cornstarch
1 c. water
1/4 tsp. almond flavoring

Mix sugar and cornstarch in saucepan. Blend in cherry juice and water. Boil until mixture thickens about 10 minutes. Stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Blend in almond flavoring.
