This recipe is great, since I have problems with dairy products my family doesn't put the cheese in and because my brother doesn't care for cream of mushroom we use cream of chicken. We also double the portion and subsitute the cheese with one can of corn (drained) and one can green beans (drained). This is a very easy and tasty recipe. Some women at work use sausage and bacon instead of hamburger (they keep the cheese) for a breakfast casserole. There is just some much you can do with this recipe.

I didn't have tater tots on hand whenever I tried this so instead I used thick french fries!! It was different, but when you are a poor college student you have to find ways to compromise...Lol

Being in England, it's not so easy to find true tater tots - they're mostly croquettes which are mashed rather than shredded or diced potato. This casserole just does not work without real tater tots! When I do find them, my family is very happy.

I'm astounded at all the variations on a theme posted here, and wish I had the time to try them all! Found tater tots last night so we're having the casserole tonight, and I'm wondering if I should go "off-plan" from my regular recipe and try one of the fabulous options listed here...!

This recipe is perfect! I sometimes make it by putting the brown hamburger at the bottom then layer the mushroom soup or cream of chicken, tots and cheese. Perfect for the picky eater! Thanks for posting!

Never tried it this way but I've been eating it since I was teenager (trust me that was a while ago) and this is the way I do it. I mix a pkg. or two of Lipton beefy onion soup mix with two to two and a half lbs. of extra lean ground beef and add salt and black pepper to taste. Then I layer this into a glass casserole dish making sure that it is very level and even. I top that with two cans(10-3/4 oz. ea.) of roasted garlic cream of mushroom soup (Campbell's)and top with frozen tater tots. Bake at 350°F for approximately 90 minutes. Then broil for about 5 or 6 minutes at high heat to really brown the tops of the tater tots. Let stand to cool just a little and serve. Trust me flavors of the onion soup mix, the beef and the mushroom soup mix together for a flavor that can't be beat.

I always bake the tater tots before putting the dish together, while I'm cooking the ground beef. Then I put a layer of tater tots at the bottom, the layer of meat and soup in the middle and another layer of tater tots with the cheese on top. Then I just stick it in the oven long enough for the cheese to melt/brown a little and it's good to go! My kids and husband LOVE this stuff!

I used one pound of ground beef ground with a can of drained mushrooms, 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup mixed with the ground beef and mushrooms. Then added a can of green beans on top. Added a little cheddar cheese then arranged the tater tots and added a little more cheddar cheese and baked @ 350°F for an hour. Best thing I think I ever made.
