GRANDMA'S APPLE DUMPLINGS 
Pare and core 6 apples. Sift together 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons baking soda. Cut in 3/4 cup shortening. Add 1/2 cup milk. Stir until flour is just moistened. Roll 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 6 squares.

Place apple in each square, add sugar and spice, dot with butter. Close dumplings, place apart in greased dish or pan. Pour on sauce. Bake 35 minutes at 375 degrees.

SAUCE:

2 c. sugar
2 c. water
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg

Boil 5 minutes. Take from heat and add a stick of butter. These are the best.
