VERSATILE POUND CAKE
1 c. Crisco or butter OR 1/2 c. each
1 2/3 c. sugar
5 eggs
2 c. cake flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. vanilla

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and lightly flour a tube pan. Cream butter or Crisco; slowly add sugar, beating until light. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in flour, salt, and flavoring and combine well.

Spoon batter into pan and bake for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pan for 5 minutes before turning onto rack.

Versatile Flavors:

1. Or use lemon flavoring only;

2. Or add 2/3 cup coconut with vanilla flavoring plus 1 teaspoon coconut flavoring;

3. Or use 1 tablespoon vanilla flavoring and pour 1/2 batter into bake tube pan, then add 1/2 or 2/3 cup Nestles chocolate flavor to rest of batter and pour on top of batter in tube pan;

4. Or add 1 cup coconut and 1 teaspoon coconut flavoring to cake batter and pour 1/2 batter in tube pan; then add 1/2 cup Nestles chocolate flavor to balance of batter and pour into tube pan. This makes a chocolate marble and coconut pound cake and is my favorite;

5. Or add to batter grated rind of 1 orange and 1 teaspoon orange flavoring (this orange flavor won a prize in the Miami Herald for an orange recipe about 30 or 35 years ago).
