DATE PIN - WHEEL COOKIES 
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. butter or other shortening
3 eggs, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda

FILLING:

1 lb. dates
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. sugar
Nuts if desired

Cook dates, water and sugar until soft; let cool. Mix sugars, butter, eggs and vanilla. Add flour, soda and salt. Divide the dough in half and roll 1/2 out on well floured board to 1/4 inch thick. Spread with half the date mixture. Roll up like a jelly roll. Repeat with other half. Cover with wax paper and chill a couple of hours. Slice about 1/8 inch thick and bake at 350 degrees until brown.
