MOM'S APPLE COBBLER
1/2 c. (1 stick) butter
2 c. sugar
2 c. water
1 1/2 c. sifted self-rising flour
1/2 c. shortening
1/3 c. milk
2 c. peeled, finely chopped apples
1 tsp. cinnamon

Melt butter in a 13 by 9 by 2 inch baking pan. In a saucepan, heat sugar and water until sugar melts. Cut shortening into flour until it looks like corn meal. Add milk, stirring until the dough leaves the sides of the bowl. Lay the dough onto a lightly floured board and knead until smooth. Roll out into a large rectangle; about 1/4 inch thick. Lay apples onto dough and sprinkle with cinnamon. Roll up as jelly roll fashion. Place in pan with melted butter. Pour sugar syrup carefully over the roll. (This looks like too much liquid, but the crust will absorb it). Bake 40 to 45 minutes at 350 degrees.
