HERMIT COOKIES 
1 c. shortening
2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. instant coffee
4 c. water
1 1/2 c. raisins
1 c. chopped nuts
1 c. chopped dates

Cream shortening and sugar. Beat well. Add eggs, beat well. Sift dry ingredients together. Add alternately with water to creamed mixture. Stir in fruits and nuts. Drop by teaspoons on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees F. for 10-12 minutes. (Good to carry in lunches.)
