DATE NUT LOAF 
1 c. dates, cut up
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. boiling water
1 egg
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 tbsp. shortening
1 1/2 c. flour

Sprinkle soda over cut up dates and pour boiling water over them. Cream shortening with sugar and egg. Add nuts and the cooled date mixture to the creamed mixture. Add sifted and measured flour and salt. Beat until thoroughly mixed. Bake in a greased loaf pan at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
