APPLE PAN DOWDY 
2 qts. sliced tart apples
1/2 c. light brown sugar
1/2 c. molasses
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 c. cold water

Mix sugar and spices together. Add molasses and water. Arrange apples in a large baking dish and pour the mixture of molasses, etc, over them. Dot with butter and cover with pastry. Bake in hot oven at 425 degrees for about 30 minutes. Then cut in the crust with knife and return to moderate oven at 350 degrees for at least 1 hour more. Serve hot with cream or ice cream.
