BUTTER COOKIES 
1 c. butter
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. vanilla
1 c. granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 1/4 c. flour (I use self-rising and sift before measuring)

Cream butter, add sugar, eggs, soda, vanilla, cream of tartar, continue beating until well creamed. Cut down speed of mixer to 2 or 3. Add flour gradually. When thoroughly mixed, drop from spoon on greased cookie sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in 375 degree oven. Remove from baking sheet with pancake turner. When cool, put into covered jar, and keep tightly covered. Makes about 5 dozen.
