BUTTERMILK BISCUITS 
2 1/4 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
7/8 to 1 c. buttermilk

Sift together dry ingredients. Use pastry blender to cut shortening into dry ingredients. Add buttermilk and mix until dough forms. flour counter; knead biscuits 12 to 14 strokes. Cut biscuits using biscuit cutter or drinking glass. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. 12 to 18 biscuits.
