BAKLAVA | |
1 lb. filo dough 1 lb. unsalted butter 1 1/2 lbs. chopped nuts 1/4 c. sugar 2 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. cloves 1/4 tsp. nutmeg Mix nuts and spices well. Melt 3 sticks of the butter. Butter a 11x13 inch pan. Lay down 2 sheets of filo dough and butter these, then lay down 8 sheets buttering every 2 layers. Sprinkle 1/3 of the nut mixture over top layer. Add 6 to 8 more sheets, buttering every 2 layers, sprinkle with 1/2 of the nuts. Add 6 to 8 more sheets, buttering every 2 layers, add rest of the nut mixture and top with the rest of the filo, buttering every 2 layers. All this building is done in the pan. Cut diamond shape pieces and hold together with whole cloves placed in each piece. Heat the last stick of butter until frothy, pour over the Baklava especially into the cuts. Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour. While baking, dissolve: 1 c. water 1 c. honey or 2 c. sugar 2 c. water 1 tsp. lemon juice Boil for 20 minutes or until it begins to thicken, water and sugar, then add the honey and boil for 10 minutes more. Cool. Pour over Baklava along the cuts; return to the oven at 400 degrees for 3 minutes. Let set for 3 hours before serving. |
