3 3/4 tsp. instant yeast 1 1/2 c. cold faucet water 4 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 4 tbsp. + 1 tsp. granulated sugar 4 tbsp. Crisco shortening 1/4 tsp. almond or lemon flavoring 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1 sm. egg 1 drop yellow food coloring (optional) Place water into a bowl (4-6 quart) and add yeast. Wait 30 seconds, then stir. Add all dry ingredients and mix well. Add shortening and mix well. In a separate bowl slightly beat egg. Add flavoring and food coloring and mix. Add egg mixture to flour and mix by hand until all flour is incorporated. Remove from bowl and place on a floured surface using 1/4 cup of flour. Knead flour into dough. Knead for 20 minutes by continuously using the palm of hand and turning dough over and over. Put 1 tablespoon oil in same bowl and place dough back into bowl, turning dough around to grease the entire surface. Cover with film and place in a warm place to proof for 1 hour. Shape into desired loaf and place on greased pan. Proof for 45 minutes in a warm place. Bake at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Cool, frost and decorate. |
