DATE BARS 
1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. flour
2 c. oatmeal
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. liquid shortening
1 tsp. baking powder

FILLING:

2 c. chopped dates
3/4 c. sugar
3/4 c. water
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Mix brown sugar, flour, oatmeal, vanilla, shortening and baking powder. Spread 2/3 of this mixture into a 9 x 13 inch pan. Pack down. Save the other 1/3 to spread on top. Filling: Combine filling ingredients (except nuts) and cook in a pan, stirring constantly until thick. Add nuts. Spread filling over the other ingredients that have been packed in pan. Add the rest on top. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.
