SUPERB APPLE DUMPLINGS 
SAUCE:

2 c. sugar
2 c. water
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 c. butter
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Combine and cook sugar, water, nutmeg and cinnamon then add butter. Set aside.

Pare and core 6 medium apples.

PASTRY:

2 c. flour
3/4 c. shortening
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. salt

Sift dry ingredients. Cut in shortening. Add milk all at once. Stir just until flour is moistened. Roll 1/4 inch thick. Cut 6, 5 inch squares (1 for each apple).

Place an apple in each square. Sprinkle with additional sugar and cinnamon. Put small amount (1 teaspoon) of butter on the apple then fold and pinch corners. Place in a baking dish. Pour sauce over all and bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) for 1 hour. Serve warm.

Mom usually doubles this recipe and makes 12 apple dumplings in a 9x13 pan.
