CHOCOLATE DATE CAKE 
1 c. chopped dates
2 eggs
2/3 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. water
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 c. chopped walnuts
1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips

Pour 1 cup boiling water into dates, let cool to room temperature. Blend together shortening, sugar, vanilla and beaten eggs. Add sifted dry ingredients. Add dates and water mixture. Top with nuts and chips. Bake at 350 degrees in greased 9x13 inch pan for 40 to 45 minutes.
