CARDAMOM CROSS BUNS
2 c. bread flour
1 c. whole wheat flour
1 pkg. active dry yeast or 2 tsp. bulk active dry yeast
1 tsp. ground cardamom
3/4 c. milk
1/3 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter
1/2 tsp. salt
1 egg
1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla
Milk

In large bowl, stir together 3/4 cup of the bread flour, cardamom and yeast. Set aside.

Heat milk, sugar, butter and salt (2 to 3 minutes in microwave on high) until warm and butter melts. Add to flour mixture. Stir 1/2 minute with mixer on low, scraping sides. Beat on high 3 minutes. With wooden spoon, stir in the whole wheat flour and as much of the remaining bread flour as possible.

Knead dough on lightly floured board until dough is smooth and elastic. Let dough rise in greased, covered bowl until double, about 1 hour. Punch down. Shape into rolls on baking sheet. With sharp knife, cut a cross in each roll. Let rise again until almost double, about 45 minutes.

Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven until golden brown. Mix powdered sugar, vanilla and enough milk to make a piping consistency. Pipe onto the crosses of each roll. Best served warm.

Since microwave ovens vary in power, you may need to adjust your cooking time.
