SLICED SUGAR COOKIES
3/4 c shortening
3/4 c butter
4 1/2 c all purpose flour
1 1/2 c sugar
1 egg
3 tbsp milk
1 egg yolk
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt

In a large mixing bowl beat shortening and butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed about 30 seconds or till softened. Add about half of the flour to the shortening mixture. Then add the sugar, whole egg, milk, egg yolk, vanilla, baking soda and salt. Beat till thoroughly combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Then beat or stir in the remaining flour.

Divide dough into 3 portions and shape into 8 inch rolls. Wrap dough in waxed paper or plastic wrap. Chill for 4-48 hours. Cut dough into 1/4 inch thick slices. Place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with sugar before baking, or frost after cookies are cool.

Bake at 375°F for 8-10 minutes.

Dough can be frozen in rolls and sliced and baked later.
