MY MOM'S DEVILS FOOD CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening (Crisco or butter
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/3 c. cocoa, dissolved in enough boiling water to make thin paste
1 egg
1 1/2 c. sour milk
2 tsp. baking soda
2 c. flour, measured before sifted
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening; add sugar and mix well. Add egg and cocoa, dissolved in boiling water. Then add sour milk and soda, mixed with flour, alternately with other ingredients. Add salt and vanilla and bake in 9 x 13 inch pan for 30 minutes. Frost with white or chocolate butter cream frosting.
