1 c. sugar
1/3 c. shortening

Cream together.

1 egg
3/4 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 4 tbsp. hot water
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. chopped apples (tart variety)
1 c. flour
1/2 c. nuts

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
