ROMAN APPLE CAKE 
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
4 med. apples, chopped

Sift dry ingredients. Add shortening, milk and mix. Add egg and vanilla. Add chopped apples. (Needn't peel.) Pour in 8"x11" greased and floured pan. Sprinkle topping over cake. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

TOPPING: Melt 2 tablespoons butter. Mix 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 2 tablespoons flour and 1/2 cup nutmeats.
