Topping:

1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 stick butter, softened slightly
3 apples, peeled, cored and chopped

Combine ingredients for topping and set aside.

1 egg
1/4 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2/3 cup milk

Mix together all ingredients for cake.

Sprinkle topping mixture over top of cake and bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until cake tests done. If top browns too quickly, cover with foil until done.
