BURNT SUGAR CAKE 
1/2 c. butter
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 egg yolks
1 c. water
2 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. burnt sugar

Beat well. Add 1/2 cup flour which has been added to 2 teaspoonfuls baking powder and mix well. Lastly fold in whites of 2 well beaten eggs.

To prepare the burnt sugar put 1/2 cup of granulated sugar in a frying pan over the fire until the sugar softens and melts and finally begins to throw off intense smoke. It really must burn. Have ready 1/2 cup of boiling water. Remove from the fire and pour in the water quickly, allowing it to boil until you have a molasses like syrup. Bottle and put away for use. This is sufficient for 3 cakes.

BROWN SUGAR ICING:

2 c. brown sugar
8 tbsp. cream
2 tsp. water

Mix in skillet. Bring to a boil. Add 2 teaspoons baking powder and beat until right thickness for cake.
