BURNT SUGAR CAKE 
1/2 c. soft shortening
3 eggs
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
1/4 c. caramel syrup (see below)
3/4 c. water

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, beating well. Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with combined caramel syrup and water. Pour into 3 greased and floured pans. Bake in 250 degree oven for 30-35 minutes.

CARAMEL SYRUP:

Melt 1 cup sugar in heavy skillet until brown. Add 1/2 cup boiling water; stir until syrup is formed. Use 1/4 cup of this for cake. For frosting and add 6 tablespoons butter to remaining syrup. Blend in 1 pound sifted confectioners' sugar, adding cream until of spreading consistency.
