DELIGHTFUL HOMEMADE BREAD | |
2 pkgs. active dry yeast 2 1/2 c. very warm water 2 tbsp. sugar or honey 2 tsp. salt 2 tbsp. melted shortening 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 c. bread flour (or regular flour) In larger mixer bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in sugar, salt, melted shortening and 3 cups of the flour. Beat vigorously 2 to 3 minutes, scraping sides of bowl occasionally (I use mixer). Sift in enough additional flour to make stiff dough. Knead by hand and add small amounts of flour until dough isn't sticky any more. Grease top and let rise until double. Knead down, let rest about 10 minutes and form into loaves. I put in regular loaf pans. Grease top and let rise in warm place about 1 1/2 hours, until doubled in size. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes. |
